What is a Project Brief?
A project brief is a document that outlines the client’s problem/need, and how you’re going to solve it. Sometimes I will include the brief as part of a larger proposal, and other times I’ll send over a one page document. Just listen to you client, take notes, and reiterate the information so you are all on the same page in terms of what you will deliver. A one-page brief will typically include summaries of:
Client history
- What does your client do?
- What is your client’s goal?
- How will this new website help them meet that goal?
- Do they have an existing website?
- If they have an existing website, why do they need a new one?
Target audience
- Who is the website intended for?
- What does the user need from this website?
- User Persona (Age, Behaviors, Spending Habits, etc.)
- What typical frustrations do the users have?
- How will your redesign help alleviate those frustration?
Technical Specs
- Does the client need hosting?
- Does the client have a domain registered?
- What kinds of functionality do they need?
- CMS (WordPress, SquareSpace, WebFlow, etc.)
- Page Builder (Elementor, Visual Composer, etc.)
- Contact Form?
- Calendar?
- Slider?
- Ecommerce?
- 99% of the time, the client will leave the functionality/building up to you. For example, they may want a contact form, so it’s up to you to determine how complicated that form is, and what plugin would be best for that specific need.
Budget / Timeline
- If the client has already approached you with a budget in mind, include that here, otherwise you’ll be estimating the cost at an hourly rate, or flat fee. For larger projects like this I will give the client a flat fee for my services.
- Third-party costs
- Detail any hosting costs, domain registration fees, theme and plugin licenses, stock photo/art costs, and font licenses.
- Include the proposed launch date.
